How Blue Zone living inspires us at Lutheran Life Communities.

Have you heard of the concept of a Blue Zone? Anthropologists, demographers and other scientists have identified five areas of the world where people live longer, active and healthy lives: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California. Researchers have found that a disproportionate number of people who live in these Blue Zones can live well into their 100s and beyond.

Communities have the opportunity to emulate key aspects of Blue Zones by creating built-in environmental factors that promote healthy living and help people to increase their social networks. At Lutheran Life Communities, we love the idea of embracing these best practices and applying them to community life. Every one of our four Chicagoland communities are committed to delivering lifestyle services that naturally create health and longevity.

Here are some of the ways we do it:

Healthy and Delicious Culinary Experiences: Behind physical exercise, food is one of the most important factors for health. That’s why we offer a variety of culinary options, featuring healthy, locally-sourced ingredients. Plus, we love to support local brands in our greater communities and keep true to Midwestern dining traditions.

Engaging Physical Activity: We go all-in on fitness. Our fitness centers are run by physiologists and offer a variety of exercise classes via MyRehab and MyVitality, including yoga and tai chi. You know the saying “You are the sum of the five people you hang out with.” Well at Lutheran Life Communities, people are hanging out with other people who are using the gym, our walking paths, gardens, nature trails and parks just outside the door, making it easy to get into some good fitness routines.

Comprehensive Support: Feeling supported is essential for psychological well-being. It fosters a sense of security and belonging, helping people to navigate challenges with confidence. Knowing that others are here for us not only reduces stress but it also boosts resilience and enables us to thrive emotionally and mentally. Our CCRC communities are places of support: offering social support and a full continuum of care, from independent living to skilled nursing care. This makes it easy to age in place with confidence.
