We get it, downsizing can be intimidating. Even the word itself sounds negative; down equals lower, less, loss. However, delaying or neglecting the vital practice of downsizing can cause individuals to make important life decisions based upon superficial barriers, versus making decisions based upon their wants and needs. This is why many people are choosing to re-focus this process and shift their perspective from “downsizing” to “rightsizing.” This month’s blog is all about how to embrace a healthier practice and mindset that focuses less on loss, and more on ensuring your space fits your goals and wants. Whether you’re looking to join a community, keep a more maintenance-free home or simply declutter for peace of mind, the process can be deeply rewarding. Let’s dive in!
The practice of rightsizing is rooted in making intentional choices that align with your future goals. So, where do you begin? We at MySolutions at Lutheran Life Communities have compiled a list of our best recommended steps to help guide your journey. Feel free to take what resonates with you, and of course, we’re happy to offer personalized guidance—just reach out to our team.
Step 1: Set Your Timeline, Intentions and Goals
The best way to rightsize is to move gradually. Give yourself a timeline that sounds reasonable and will help keep the process moving, and begin sooner than you think you have to. Rest is important!
Before diving into sorting and packing, take some time to reflect on what you hope to achieve in the next five, 10 or 15 years. Are you looking to reduce home maintenance? Move closer to family? Free up time and energy for hobbies and travel? Identifying your primary motivations will help you make decisions with confidence. Make a list of must-haves for your new or existing living space. Keeping your priorities in mind will make the transition smoother.
Step 2: Start Small and Declutter Thoughtfully
Sorting through years of belongings can be overwhelming, but breaking the process into manageable phases can make it more approachable and enjoyable. Start with a small space, like a linen closet or kitchen drawer, to build momentum.
Consider the Four-Box Method: Keep, donate, gift or discard. Items with sentimental value can be photographed or passed down to loved ones. If you’re unsure about an item, ask yourself: Does this bring me joy? Do I use it regularly? Will I need it in my new space? If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go.
For clothing, we recommend the Reverse Hanger Method: The same day you begin the process of rightsizing, turn all of your hangers around so that the open end faces you. Each time you wear an item, turn the hanger back to face the correct way. After six months (or the timeline that sounds right for you), remove any items that are still on backward hangers and decide whether to donate or sell them.
Pro tip: If you’re looking for an extra set of hands, MySolutions can be your partner in packing as well as moving. Just give us a ring and we’re happy to help.
Step 3: Plan for Your New Space
If you’ve already chosen a new home, take measurements and assess the storage available. This will help determine what furniture and belongings will fit comfortably. Lutheran Life Communities offer floor plans to assist with planning.
Step 4: Embrace the Next Chapter
As you move through rightsizing, keep your eyes on the prize: less stress and more time for what truly matters. This process is about creating a lifestyle that brings you joy and fulfillment.
The practice of rightsizing is not just about reducing space—it’s about gaining freedom, simplifying your surroundings and embracing a future filled with possibility. If you’re considering a move, our team at MySolutions is here to help you navigate the journey. We invite you to explore our communities and discover how downsizing can be the beginning of a vibrant, worry-free chapter.
